Dennis Kucinich on Food System

クリントン対オバマ、かろうじてエドワーズという体勢の中、それ以外の民主党候補者が話題になることはほとんどない。いわゆる泡沫候補なのだが、しかしデニス・クシニッチの理念と政策はどの候補者よりもすばらしいと思う。平和省(Department of Peace)の創設を訴えるクシニッチは初めからイラク戦争、愛国法に反対を貫き通している。彼の政策のうち特に注目したいのが食の生産・流通システムに関する政策である。少なくとも大統領選用のウェブサイトにおいてこの問題をとりあげているのは候補者の中では彼だけだ。狂牛病、遺伝子組み換え食品、工場畜産(factory farming)、大規模アグリビジネス、精肉工場の労働環境など、フードシステムの問題を改善し、持続可能な有機農法と地産地消システムを推進しようとしている。フードシステムの問題は政治議論で取り上げられることはあまりないが、人間の命と健康、人権問題、社会経済構造、生態環境などあらゆることにつながっている。「食」はなぜ完全資本主義に任せるべきではないのか、例えばEric Schlosserの"Fast Food Nation"やMarion Nestleの"Food Politics"（どちらも日本語訳がある）などを読むとよくわかる。これほどに根源的な問題をクシニッチは見過ごすことなく、候補者の中では唯一正面から取り組もうとしている。

In the current picture of Clinton vs. Obama, barely, plus Edwards, other Democratic candidates are hardly talked about. One of those fringe candidates he is, however, I think that Dennis Kucinich has the most wonderful ideas and policies than any other candidate. Kusinich, who proposes to establish a Department of Peace, has been consistent from the very beginning in opposing the Iraq War and the Patriot Act. Among his policies in particular, the policies regarding food production and distribution is noticeable. At least on campaign websites, Kucinich is the only candidate who talks about this issue. He proposes to improve situations of food system, such as Mad Cow Disease/BSE, genetically modified food, factory farming, giant agribusiness, working environment of meatpackers etc, and to promote a sustainable organic farming and a system based on local production, local consumption. The issue of food system is rarely discussed in political debates, though, it connects with people's health and life, human rights, socio-economic structure, ecology and many other issues. Why "food" should not be entirely left to Capitalism can be clear by reading, for example, Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation" and Marion Nestle's "Food Politics". Of all Democratic candidates, only Kusinich does not overlook such a fundamental problem and proposes to work on it.
